Step 1
1 of 2

(1) Over his life, TJ may become more happy on an absolute level, but because of the adaptation-level phenomenon, he may not fully appreciate this trend. As his circumstances approve, he will come to take his new level of happiness for granted, and wish for even greater happiness. To counteract this effect, TJ should frequently reflect on the progress he has made over his entire lifetime, rather than on his current mood.

(2) Even as his conditions improve, TJ may feel unhappy because of relative deprivation. If, for instance, upon securing a high-paying job, he moves from a neighborhood where he made more than his average neighbor to a ritzy neighborhood where his average neighbor makes much more than he does, he may feel worse off than before. To counteract (or take advantage of) this effect, TJ should avoid comparing himself to those more well-off than him (while reflecting on how fortunate he is compared to some).
