In the 1600s, the main labor group in the colonies consisted of indentured servants from Europe. However, later the employers realized that it was much more profitable to use the slave labor of African captives. As a result, the transatlantic slave trade expanded rapidly, and merchants forcibly transported thousands of Africans to the Caribbean, South, and North America. Due to this transportations and reproduction, the African population in the English colonies increased considerably during the 18th century. By 1760 the number of slaves from Africa reached 250000, which was 10 times higher than it had been in 1700.
