Question

A 20.0-kg box rests on a table. (a) What is the weight of the box and the normal force acting on it? (b) A 10.0-kg box is placed on top of the 20.0-kg box. Determine the normal force that the table exerts on the 20.0-kg box and the normal force that the 20.0-kg box exerts on the 10.0-kg box.

Solution

1 of 3

(a) Let m=10.0m=10.0 kg and M=20.0M=20.0 kg. The weight of the box acts vertically downwards and has the magnitude of

Mg=196 N.Mg=196\text{ N}.

Before we place the smaller box on top, the sufrace of the table is acted upon by vertically downwards weight of the larger box so the normal force will have the same magnitude as this weight (i.e. 196196 N) but will point vertically upwards.
