Between 1347 and 1353 , the Black Death, or bubonic plague, killed one out of every three people in Europe. The disease was first spread by fleas on rats. Rats were common in Europe at the time and few people paid attention to them. People threw garbage into the streets, and the rats thrived in these unsanitary conditions. The plague could also be spread from person to person through the air. Therefore, most doctors would not treat people who were infected. The few who did treat people wore a leather mask with a beak filled with herbs. They believed the herbs would keep them from being infected. Doctors often treated patients by "bleeding" them. They thought that draining excess blood would balance bodily fluids and make the patient better. This practice made the problem worse. In all, over 25 million people died from the Black Death in Europe alone-more than in any war in history.
