Once the pollen reaches the cone, germination of the pollen commences, and the production of the pollen tube is induced. The pollen tube is a tube-like structure which elongates, and functions as the passageway for the release of the sperm cells (initially generative cell before division) from the pollen grain. This structure would pass through the micropyle, and elongate further into the ovules of the female gametophyte where the egg cell is located.
