Formation of Corpus Luteum

  • After rupture of the Graafian follicle, the LH ( luteinizing hormone ) secreted from the pituitary gland will transform the granulosa cells and theca cells of the ruptured Graafian follicle into Lutein cells ( i.e. after ovulation, the ruptured follicle becomes a Corpus Luteum ) through the following steps : i- the cells of Zona granulosa become hypertrophied, they acquire more smooth endoplasmic reticulum. mitochondria, lipid and yellow Lutein pigments. ii- the cells of the Theca interna enlarge in size, they acquire more lipid and more endoplasmic reticulum. Many blood capillaries and other stromal spindle- shaped cells grow between Theca interna cells.
