When signing an armistice with Germany and other Central Powers in 1918, the Allies wanted to make sure that those countries are demilitarized and that the territories they conquered are returned to those who owned them before the war. The Allies also demanded that Germany removes its military from Rhineland, a territory located on the border between France and Germany, as this would make them unable to make another invasion into French territory. The territories that Germany needed to return were also near their border with France, as well as in Belgium.
