Question

ARGUMENT In 2010 the National Governors' Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers presented national standards for math and Englishlanguage arts for students in kindergarten through high school. The federal government hopes states will use these standards instead of the varied state guidelines. But education is usually left to the states. Do you think a national approach is good or bad? Write a letter to your representative in Congress giving your view.

For this activity you will have to write a letter to your representative and either persuade them to embrace a national approach to education standards or a state-by-state approach. Keep in mind the differences between a national approach and a state-by-state case: if the states get to choose the educational standards this has certain implications and there would be different implications if the federal government gets to choose the standards. You will have to pick one side based on your own beliefs and then defend that side when addressing the representative.
