The third-person limited narrator of "Catch the Moon" describes events only as Luis perceives them. Readers hear Luis's thoughts as he describes his gang activities and as he comments on his father or Naomi. Readers have to judge whether Luis's comments are accurate or fair and infer what his thoughts reveal about his character. Readers also should be alert to dramatic irony in the story: a contrast between what Luis thinks and what the reader knows is true.

The mood of "The Masque of the Red Death" is always dark, but it shifts as the story develops. In the exposition of the story-the first paragraph in which Poe sets the scene—the mood is macabre and grotesque. The images, which are explicit and even gory, evoke the atmosphere outside the abbey walls, where the Red Death is ravaging the people in the countryside. The mood inside the abbey, after the prince has gathered his friends inside its walls, is markedly different.

Poe gives a detailed description of how Prince Prospero decorated the seven rooms in which the masked ball was held. Reread the description, and then write a sentence describing the mood evoked by one of the rooms.
