Echinoderms inhabit all kinds of marine environments, ranging from shallow coastal water to more than 10 000 m deep ocean trenches. Echinoderms range in diameter from 1 cm to 1 m. They are often colored by beautiful colors.

Echinoderms are radially symmetrical animals, just like cnidarians and ctenophores. The fossil record of echinoderms begins back to the Cambrian period (500 million years ago).

Those early echinoderms from this period appear to have been sessile and evolved radial symmetry as an adaptation to a sessile existence.

Later, they evolved the ability to move, while today majority of echinoderms can move (only 80 species are sessile). They are moving by slowly crawling along the ocean bottom.
