The chloroplast consists of an outer and an inner membrane. The inner membrane encloses a space called the stroma, and it is filled with fluid. In it, thylakoids have the shape of a disc packed one on the other. They are arranged in groups called a granum. Such structures in the chloroplast perform complex chemical reactions in the light reaction and the Calvin cycle. The entire chloroplast structure is adapted to perform photosynthesis.
