The reason for civil disorder in Sri Lanka was the conflict between its minority Hindu Tamil population and the majority Buddhist Sinhalese population. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was a militant organization formed in response to the violent persecution and discrimination of the Tamils by successive Sinhalese governments and they demanded a separate independent state, Tamil Eelam. The Sinhalese didn't want the country to be divided and a bloody civil war erupted in 1983 and lasted for 26 years.
