Case history 1. A male researcher wanting to determine the pathogenesis of a certain fungus that often attacks women did the following experiment on himself. He taped a piece of gauze heavily inoculated with the fungus to the inside of his thigh and left it there for several days, periodically moistening it with sterile saline. After a time, he experienced a severe skin reaction that resembled a burn and the skin peeled off What does this experiment tell you about the factors in pathogenesis related to portal of entry and gender?
Solution
VerifiedSince the fungal that was tested infected both female and male and both the vaginal canal and the inner thigh of the male, it can be said that it can enter violently and rapidly multiply. Since Candida is an opportunistic fungal, it has to have a host with a compromised immune system, or for its entry, it has to have some kind of skin irritation or a cut where the fungal can enter the cells. The scientist probably had some kind of a cut on its thigh so the Candida entered and infected the area. Also, fungi that cause this kind of infection (of the skin) can enter moist areas, because there is no dry skin that will shed so the fungal can easily enter the epidermal cells and disperse further into the skin.
