Causes ocean warming and reduction, leading to coral bleaching.
Solution
VerifiedPopulation growth and the burning of fossil fuels have led to an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in ocean water, which has great negative consequences for coral reefs. As much as one third of the total amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans. Carbon dioxide reacts with ocean water and acid is formed, thus increasing the acidity of the water. From the Industrial Revolution until today, the level of ocean acidity has increased by as much as 30 percent, but an even bigger problem is that the level of acidity continues to grow rapidly as a result of increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and thus and in the waters of the oceans. The result is a reduction in the levels of carbonate ions that are necessary for coral formation.
