The period from 460 B.C. to 429 B.C. is known as the golden age for Athens, also referred to as the Age of Pericles. Pericles was an Athenian statesman who worked to improve the city-state's economy, improving its democratic government as well. As for the very functioning of the government, Pericles established a stipend - a fixed salary for the people who participated in the government. This means people, regardless of their financial status, were able to reserve time to work for the administration of the polis.
