In response to the Compromise of 1850, southern senator John Calhoun stated his dissatisfaction with the plan. He believed salvery needed addressing, but that the compromise did not do enough for southern interests. In his speech he gestured at the notion that should the south’s demands not be met, they would likely secede from the Union.
