Compare and contrast Europe and Asia on the eve of European westward expansion. What is the significance of the differences you note?
Solution
VerifiedThe Europeans and the Asians (particularly the Chinese) were experiencing some of their most prosperous periods during the 1400s. The Europeans were just beginning their territorial expansion, while the Chinese were also doing the same in sending naval expeditions, in addition to their relationships with other states in the region such as Japan and Korea. Whereas Europe had major and wealthy cities such as London, China had even bigger and more populous settlements such as Beijing. Chinese infrastructure such as the Forbidden City rivaled or even surpassed those of Europe, and its military was on par or larger than the largest European armies. These similarities show that China and Europe were strong powers in their own right, and could have been rivals in world influence had domestic issues and economic strains pushed China to abandon its naval expeditions and instead being closing to the outside world.
