Parents and peers have a similar impact on behavioral development in that they are both minimally influential-- much of a child’s temperament and personality is determined by heredity. Still, they have unique impacts: parents can push and support their children toward academic success and shape their behavior indirectly by choosing neighborhoods and schools; peers, meanwhile, strongly influence habits, tastes, and language (pgs. 530-531).
