It is important to recognize that early modern states differed in many ways from twentieth or twenty-first century states. How would you define those differences? Consider, among other things, the personal role of the ruler, the use of violence, the means of establishing authority, and the extent to which the state could shape the lives of its citizens.
Solution
VerifiedThe main difference is that the ruler ruled by his own authority, without any checks and balances that exist today. In most cases, he ruled absolutely because it was thought that his rule, his crown, comes directly from God, no matter the religion. Today that kind of ruling is known as dictatorship. They used violence and severe punishment to establish authority and in some occasions to deal with their enemies. Every decision that the ruler made, directly influenced the state and lives of its citizen. No matter the decision, there were no people who would stand against it, so the ruler had freedom to choose how ever he likes. Even though today institutions that provide checks and balances are more sophisticated and are democratic, there are still examples around the world where leaders rule absolutely. Ways how to control people, how to monitor citizens are more sophisticated than ever, due to modern technology. Also, because of that technology ways to hurt people and ways to use violence towards the enemy are also more dangerous then before.
