Solution
VerifiedThe objective of this exercise is to practise the use of the Spanish prepositions a and de followed by a definite article.
Said prepositions have opposite values: de introduces the value of a genitive, saying from, whilst a bears the value of a dative, meaning to.
When followed by the masculine definite article in singular, the two elements will contract as is shown below:
a + el = al; de + el = del.
Example: Salgo del barrio y voy al supermercado.
These are the only cases of contraction in Spanish. There are exceptions, though. When the masculine definite article in singular forms part of a personal name, then it will not contract with the preposition.
Example: Soy de El Salvador. Voy a El Salvador.
