Define and give example of maturation. Define infantile amnesia and explain how maturation contributes to this phenomenon.
Solution
Verified-Maturation refers to a biologically-determined process of growth and development that can not be substantially altered by culture or experience. Examples of maturation abound, including cross-cultural patterns of language development (i.e. from babbling to single words to telegraphic speech) and motor development (i.e. from rolling over to crawling to standing to walking).
-Infantile amnesia is the inability to consciously recall memories that were stored before a certain age (about four years in humans). This is a natural part of the maturation process, as early rapid neuron growth takes precedence over the stable neural connections that are required for long-term memory.
