Fair use is the provision that allows an individual to use copyrighted material even when they don't have explicit permission to do that. The term was first mentioned in the Copyright Act of 1976. Copyright infringement and the abuse of the fair use concept are punishable by law. It is illegal to borrow someone else's intellectual property without following the proper guidelines of both. Generally, fair use of copyrighted material is applied when one uses another's property ethically and appropriately.
