Hitler's obsession with anti-Semitism stemmed from a long tradition of anti-Semitism in Europe. He claimed that Germans belonged to a superior race of Aryans and that he desired to exterminate the Jewish people in order to maintain the nation's superiority. Furthermore, in 1935, the Nazis issued Nuremberg, which formally separates Jews from Germans by legalizing anti-Semitic actions and suppressing the Jewish people in Germany. These regulations stripped German Jews of their citizenship, made lawful Jewish marriages illegal, and made it illegal to display the German flag.
