Stars in the centre of the galaxy are usually older and most of them orbit a supermassive black hole. They orbit in no regular plane and their trajectories are elliptical. These stars give the bulge such a circular shape, brightness and colour.

The disk contains stars that are in the galactic plane and in a circular orbit. They are mostly young stars since the disk is composed of gas and dust enabling star formation.
