Oxbow lake is U or horseshoe-shaped independent lake. It forms when the stream cuts off a meander and again flows along a straight path. The stream then deposits material along the adjoining meander and finally blocks off its water supply. The blocked-off meander becomes an oxbow lake. The water in an oxbow lake remains still, and it eventually dries up.
