Difference between bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder

  1. A person with bulimia often fasts or follows a strict diet and then binges, or quickly consumes large amounts of food. Whereas people with binge eating disorder consume huge amounts food at one time but do not try to purge.
  2. The exact cause of bulimia is unknown, but social pressures, self-esteem issues and family problems may be the factor. Binge eating disorder may signal the use of food as the coping mechanism for strong emotions or depressions.

Similarities between bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder

  1. Both are eating disorders involves overeating.
  2. Treatment of both includes medication as well as psychological counselling.
