Question

Describe the similarities and differences between arithmetic and geometric sequences.

Solution

Verified
Step 1
1 of 2

Arithmetic and geometric sequences both give lists of numbers that follow a certain pattern. Some sequences can be both arithmetic and geometric such as the sequence 5, 5, 5, ...This sequence is arithmetic since it has a common difference of 0 and also geometric since it has a common ratio of 1.

The difference between an arithmetic sequence and a geometric sequence is that the terms of an arithmetic sequence has a common difference, that is, you are adding the same number each time to find the next term. A geometric sequence has a common ratio, that is, you are multiplying by the same number each time to find the next terms.
