Prior to the actual invasion of D-Day, Allied bombing campaigns targeted industrial and military sites and destroyed infrastructure like railroads and bridges in order to weaken Germany’s capability to defend itself. Then, on the night of June 5, 1944, the Allies dropped paratroopers to prepare the beaches for a massive amphibious landing the next day. On June 6, 156,000 Allied troops arrived and battered their way inland through massive gunfire, sustaining high casualties until General Patton’s tanks helped them break through German defenses.
