Thucydides described Attica as a region free from all types of war for an extended period, however, because it had little fertile land it wasn't suitable for immigration which meant its inhabitants stayed culturally homogeneous. Only when wars struck other regions did Attica and Athens experience a large inflow of immigrants who embraced the Athenian culture and became naturalized.
