Alexander the Great did find the city of Alexandria but had nothing to do with the creation of the Library of Alexandria. It was built by one of his generals, Ptolemy, who took Egypt and established himself as its ruler, or by his son. It is estimated that the Library of Alexandria was built in the first half of the 3rd century B.C. It ended up being one of the most important institutions of the ancient world, holding tens of thousands of ancient scrolls, until it was burned down in 48 B.C. by the forces of Julius Caesar while besieging Alexandria.
