Enemas can be classified as retention enemas or non-retention enemas.

Retention enemas\textbf{Retention enemas} are small amounts of liquid that are retained in the intestine for a specified period after they are given. This type of enemas has a few functions such as softening the faeces, eliminating the parasites, lubricate or expel flatus.

Non-retention\textbf{Non-retention} type of enema requires an increased quantity of solution. Non-retention enemas are used to clean the bowel of faeces and flatus.
