Animals with very simple body plans, such as the sponge, have relatively few Hox genes. In contrast, animals with more complicated bodies, such as mammals, have many. Researchers speculate that each Hox gene can govern the morphological features of a particular region of the body. By having multiple Hox genes, different regions of the body can become more specialized, and therefore, more complex.
