Question

Draw a perspective formula for each of the following: a. (S)-2-chlorobutane b. (R)-1,2-dibromobutane

Solution

Verified
Step 1
1 of 3

Figure given below shows structure of 2-chlorobutane. Greater the atomic number of atom bonded to the chiral carbon, higher is the priority. In -CH3_{3} and -CH2_{2}CH3_{3}, C is bonded to (H,H,H) and (H,H,C) respectively. Cancel the common atoms; group with higher atomic number of uncommon atoms gets higher priority.

Order of priority :Cl >> CH2_{2}CH3_{3} >> CH3_{3} >> H

For convenience, H is drawn with hatched wedge. Note that hatched and solid wedges should be next to each other. For S configuration, the arrow from Cl to CH2_{2}CH3_{3} to CH3_{3} should be counterclockwise.
