Having a sickle-cell disease that is heterozygous for the trait is advantageous to a person living in central Africa, as it provides resistance to malarial infection (partly protected from both malaria and anemia). In comparison to the homozygous dominant for the trait which confers greater risk from anemia and homozygous recessive that confers greater risk for malaria.

The case in which the heterozygote genotype has higher relative fitness than either the homozygote dominant or homozygote recessive genotype is referred to as heterozygote advantage which is evident in this disease in areas in central Africa.
