Hippos and whales share a common ancestor that dwells on land and had long skulls and large carnivorous teeth. Hippos and whales have smooth, nearly hairless skin that lacks glands that assist them in their aquatic lifestyle. They both live in water but hippos can also stay on land while whales cannot.
