The growth of railroad technology allowed businesses to be located closer to the resources these businesses needed. For example, because of railroads a mining town could be set up in a desert of New Mexico and could be reliably supplied. This allowed the relocation of people and funds to better exploit the said resource. This had the effect of spreading businesses, and while the majority of those who worked in such businesses were poor this also helped both spread the wealth around the country, but also it spread economic development.
