Explain how gallstones form.
Solution
VerifiedBile is a dark green to yellowish brown fluid, produced by the hepatocytes, which helps with digestion of dietary fats and removes certain waste products from the body. Bile consists of 95% water in which are dissolved bile salts, bile pigment, cholesterol, electrolytes. The gallbladder stores bile and delivers it into the small intestine. Gallstones occur when bile forms stones (pieces of solid material) in the gallbladder. The stones form when the amount of cholesterol in the bile is high. The cholesterol precipitate and form solid crystals, which can enlarge and form gallstones. Some conditions, such as cholecystitis or increased cholesterol secretion cause the formation of gallstones. Too much bilirubin in our bile also can cause gallstones formation (in case of liver damage and certain blood disorders).
