From a chemical point of view, an acid is every substance that produces hydronium ions (H3_3O+^+) when dissolving in water.

For instance, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) starts to dissolve in water, it will split up into:

  • hydrogen ion (H+^+)

  • chlorine ion (Cl^-)

The negative end of the water molecule (where oxygen is placed) will attract positively charged hydrogen ions which will result in the form of hydronium ions, as shown in the picture below.
