John Smith was an adventurer who helped an English settlement in North America survive. Joint-stock companies funded English colonies, investors within stock companies would put their money together to support a colony for profit. Jamestown was a settlement on a small peninsula claimed by the Virginia Company who sailed to the eastern coast of North America. The Powhatan were the people near the new colonists of Jamestown who eventually ruined the farms of the colonists and also killed their livestock, causing the settlement to decrease in strength. The headright system was created by the Virginia Company in 1618 to try and bring in field laborers by allowing anyone who had paid their own or anyone else's way to Virginia to get 50 acres of land. An indentured servant would work for a term of usually four to seven years in exchange for a way into North America along with food and shelter. A royal colony is a settlement ruled entirely by a king, which is what happened to Virginia after the problems of colonization continued to increase as King James took control. Nathaniel Bacon was a planter and the son of a rich Englishman, he hated Native Americans and made an army to fight them in Virginia.
