The genetic code is a standard rule of translating the genetic material of all living organisms into polypeptides or proteins. It is considered universal since all living organisms have a genetic material known as DNA which contains the set of instructions needed for determining biological traits. DNA is made up of four nucleotides — adenine (A), guanine (G), thymine (T), and cytosine (C). Then, DNA is transcribed into RNA which is made up of four nucleotides almost similar to DNA except that the T nucleotide becomes uracil (U) nucleotide. Despite the anatomical, biochemical, and physiological differences of living organisms, the same rules of the genetic code are applied to every living organism. Examples are 1) all start codons are called AUG and 2) all stop codons must either be UAA, UAG, and UGA.
