Question

For what reasons would you use participant observation instead of a survey?

Solution

Verified

Participant observation is a qualitative research method and as such it is descriptive. It can give us a deeper insight when it comes to case studies. Some aspects of a situation cannot be measured in numbers. Some causes cannot be determined by simple answering of questions as it is done in a survey. That is when being around the people that are in the particular situation is more useful to the research. Participant observation is probably the closest we can get to experiment in sociology.
