There are two (but not limited to such a number) reasons why a large reflecting mirror is much preferrable over a large refracting lens:

  1. The final image produced with a lens might have a chromatic aberration effect, but for mirrors, the final image will not have a chromatic aberration.
  2. A large refracting lens will be much heavier than a large reflecting mirror; a telescope with a refracting lens might be much more uncomfortable to transfer and use unlike that of a mirror telescope.
