We can use the periodic table by locating the elements in it in order to see which group does the element belong to. For example, taking the "stair-step" black line of the periodic table as the reference point, we know that the elements located to the left of it are metals (alkali, alkaline earth or transition metals). Elements to the very right of this table are nonmetals. Metals have the tendency to lose electrons while nonmetals tend to gain electrons. So, metals form cation whereas nonmetals form anions. This is how we can make use of the periodic table to determine what class of ions we would have.
