General Porfirio Diaz had a role in Mexico's economic and political turmoil. He threw the political balance out of whack by crushing the opposition right away. There's economic progress, but only the wealthiest have benefitted from his system. Because salaries were lower and the poor were subjected to the peonage system, the poor remained poor. Peonage is a system in which laborers were given monetary loans and were required to repay them through protracted labor in the landowners' haciendas. As a result, the political and economic balances were awry throughout his period.
