When the solar system began to form, the matter orbiting the sun began to coalesce to form planetesimals. This is the beginning of the formation of the planet. Later, these objects added mass and became larger. Due to the higher temperature closer to the sun, the planets were formed from a material that has a higher melting point and was thus resistant to temperatures. Planets farther from the sun were built mostly of ice, because temperatures are much lower.
