In the island of Thrinacia, Helios, the sun god, is known to take care of his sacred cattle. As such, before reaching Thrinacia, Odysseus received several warnings to refrain from eating Helios' cattle and Odysseus, in turn, made this known to his men.

However, Odysseus' men failed to heed his warnings and still ate Helios' sacred cattle out of immense hunger and thirst when their supplies ran low. Unsurprisingly, this enraged Helios and led him to plead with the gods to punish Odysseus and his men.
