During the second invasion by the Persians, Spartan army of 300 men held them off for three days by engaging them in the Battle of Thermopylae. That gave the Athenians enough time to evacuate the city and prepare themselves better for the invaders. They also joined forces during the Battle of Palatea, in which they dealt the Persians the final blow during the same invasion.
