Not having nylons or having a bit less sugar is pretty good when compared to being bombarded half a year like London, or being under constant siege for 4 years and resorting to eating animals as was the case in Leningrad. This just meant that, while war did hit to an extent American families, they were still kept safe and rather well fed and dressed overall.
