Question

How does heparin help prevent blood clot formation?

Solution

Verified

Heparin is a product of the heparin-secreting cells, which are most abundant in the liver, lungs, in the connective tissue surrounding capillaries, and prevents blood clot formation. Heparin inhibits coagulation by inactivating thrombin ( the major clotting protein) and preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Heparin and Coumadin are used as drugs to prevent abnormal clotting.
