The Frankish tradition of dividing the empire by heirs after the death of the ruler significantly weakened Europe. Charlemagne died in 814, and 30 years later the great Carlongian empire was divided by his grandsons into the West, Middle, and East Frankish kingdoms. Since Europe was invaded by Muslims, Hungarians, and Vikings in the 9th century, the divided Frankish empire led to political and territorial instability, and this also resulted in the loss of Normandy.
